About Us
Wairau Valley School is a small, rural, full-primary school, located 40 kilometres from Blenheim on State Highway 63.
The Wairau Valley community is centred around a small village, comprising a church, tavern, community hall and golf course.
The school is close to the Wairau River and has the Mount Richmond range to the North, St Arnaud and the Nelson Lakes to the West, and Blenheim to the East.
It is a U2, Decile 5 school with a current roll of 50 students (2024).
The school promotes a caring, rural, family orientated environment.
The school buildings are set in pleasant surroundings, with a large playing field. There is a tennis court area, adventure playground, junior playground, native gardens, vegetable garden and swimming pool. Use is made of the Community Hall and Wairau Valley Golf Course, which neighbours the school grounds.
The Wairau Valley School Fundraising Committee supports the school by fundraising and helping to organise events such as Pets Day. The Fundraising Committee always welcomes new members. Please contact the school office for more information.
Traditionally the Wairau Valley has been a farming area, however, blocks of land are becoming smaller and the farming more diverse. In recent times there has been a growing trend towards lifestyle blocks with parents commuting to Blenheim to work. Vineyards are also being developed in the valley.
The school values digital literacy and all students are able to access devices to support teaching and learning.
Wairau Valley School is an Enviroschool and runs a Kids Edible Gardens Programme.
School visits for four year olds will begin approximately one term before they start school on a day that suits both the school and whanau. These visits are designed to further smooth the transition to school and give children a variety of school-life experiences.
